Old, unused crayons can be helpful in making unique candles

Many people think that burning a candle is as simple as lighting the wick. There are a lot of considerations that many people do not take into account. Here are 5 tips for people who frequently use candles to make sure they last their longest and do not do any damage to your home.

  • Trim your candles’ wicks regularly – Your wick should always be kept at a quarter of an inch. Any longer, and you run the risk of having a candle that burns too fast and releases a lot of heavy, black smoke. A small pair of scissors or nail clippers work great for trimming a wicks.

  • Keep your candles out of drafts – Burning candles in drafty areas often leady to uneven melting and excess smoke. It can also significantly shorten the life of your candle. Look at your candle’s flame and not its movements. If the flame shoots straight up, you are fine. If it wavers to the side, the candle may be sitting too close to a window, vent or fan.

  • Burn your candles for an appropriate length of time – As a general rule of thumb, you should burn a candle one hour for each for every inch of its diameter. Otherwise the wax in the middle of the candle will be melted too quickly.

  • Thoroughly extinguish a candle’s flame – Candles snuffers work best for extinguishing a candle. If you don’t have one of these tools, you can carefully place your index finger in front of the flame and gently blow on it. The amount of wax that splatters from the candle should be minimized by this process.

  • Refrigerate candles between uses – One little known secret is that cold candles burn slower than candles that are kept at room temperature. You can cover your candles in foil or Saran Wrap (to ensure that the wick doesn’t absorb moisture) and put them in the refrigerator for one hour before lighting it.

Keep these thoughts in mind the next time you light a candle. With proper care, you will get more life out of your candles and keep those in your home safe. Check our other candle making articles for more tips on candle safety, crafting and much more!
