Candle Making Precautions

While candle making is not necessarily a dangerous craft, there’s still a few safety precautions that you’ll want to put in place and implement, especially if you have a crew of people working for you. In general the biggest hazard of candle making is simply the potential fire hazards associated when dealing with wax.

Though it’s not often a problem, carelessly dealing with wax can result in fire, burn, and/or skin irritation. You should also remember to use precautions when using certain fragrances. If you are allergic or are working with someone who may have adverse allergic affects to working with scented fragrances, use discretion. Otherwise, simply use the following precautionary tips to better optimize and secure your safe workspace and reduce the potential of danger.

Prepare Your Candle making Workspace

Whether you plan on setting up shop for the day or mass producing large order of candles—you’ll want to make sure you take the time and adequately prepare your workspace.

  • Before you start working on any project make sure to cover your workspace or counter space with newspapers, or a tarp. Cloth will work; however, it may cause tedious cleanup, especially if wax spills.
  • Make sure to keep your workspace clean and organized. Try to keep your tools close in reach to avoid knocking or tipping any melted wax over.
  • Prepare for spills – If you’re a candle maker, let’s face3 it—spills happen. Make sure to have the proper clean up utensils handy.
  • Fire prepared – If you’re running your own candle-making business, you’ll have to make sure to have the proper fire precautions on hand and easily accessible. Make sure you have a fire extinguisher and the proper first aid in case of an accident.   
  • Make sure your tools are in proper working order – Before you start n any project, make sure that you assemble all your tools and make sure that they are in proper working order.

Starting your own candle making business is a fun hobby, and a great way to earn an income from home, but like most skilled trades—it requires the proper amount of attention, precaution and safety.
