How to Make Hand-Dipped Candles

Hand dipped candles provide a great, old-world look to many homes. Making your own candles provides you with a fun and rewarding hobby, as well as a product that you can sell at craft and antique stores. If you would like to try dipping your own candles, you will first need to gather a few items:

  • ½ pound of paraffin wax

  • A double boiler or empty coffee can

  • A half filled pot of water to hold your wax container (for safety reasons, never place a container full of wax directly on a heat source).

  • A long handled, wooden stirring spoon

  • A candle or meat thermometer

  • A thoroughly-cleaned stovetop

  • Several feet of candle wick

  • A sharp knife

Once you have collected these materials, you are ready to make your very own, hand-dipped candles:

  1. Cut your wax into small bits.

  2. Heat your pan of water to a gentle boil over a medium flame (using high heat is a fire hazard).

  3. Put your wax pieces in a coffee can or double boiler, and place the container in the boiling water.

  4. Stir your wax until it has fully melted and reached a temperature of 160° Fahrenheit. Use your thermometer to monitor the temperature from the center of the liquid wax.

  5. Lower the heat of your stove, but keep enough heat so that your wax stays melted.

  6. Cut a piece of wick that is long enough to create your desired size of candle (for example, if you want two, 12 inch candles, you will need 28 inches of wick).

  7. Double over your piece of wick so that the ends are even in length.

  8. Dip the two ends of the wick into your wax and pull them back out. The wick will probably float at the top of the melted wax the first few times you attempt this.

  9. Allow the wax to cool for approximately one minute. Do not allow the two ends to touch each other.

  10. Repeat steps 8 and 9 until the two candles have reached their desired diameter. You can roll them on a smooth surface to correct any bumps or imperfections.

  11. Heat the wax to 182° F and dip your candles one more time for several seconds. Remove the candles and allow them to cool down.

  12. Use your knife to cut the bottoms of your candles and trim away extra wax. The bottoms of your candles should be as flat as possible.

  13. Hang your candles up to dry.

  14. Once they are completely dry, cut the wicks to the desired length.
