Why Make Candle Wicks?

There are many advantages to making your own candle wicks, aside from the fact that’s it’s simply an enjoyable hobby. Creating homemade candle wicks is just another way of making your already unique handmade candles—even more unique. Unlike candle wicks that are produced by machine, no two handmade candle wicks are the same. In addition, making your own wicks as opposed to buying factory-made wicks often greatly improves the quality of the candle, especially the duration in which it burns.

Difference In Wick Sizes

Creating a candle wick is a good way to experiment with custom sizes to better optimize your variety of candles.  Whether you’re making a wick for a large or small candle—making your own wicks ensures that you can make the custom size wick for each individual candle.

Wick Materials For All Shapes And Sizes

One of the best things about making your own homemade candle wicks is that you have complete control over what material you decide to use. For example, if you’re making gel or paraffin candles you can custom make silicate based wicks that will burn slower and longer—optimizing the oil-based candle experience. If on the other hand, you’re making organic candles, you can easily use all-natural, all-organic materials to make the wick; thus ensuring that all parts of your organic candle collection is completely organic.

Making Your Own Homemade Candle Wicks

Whether you’re just getting into making your own wicks or you’ve been making wicks for some time, the general principle is that most candle wicks are made from braided fibers that gently burn in the wax of the candle. Needless to say, all that is required to make a homemade candle wick is cotton and some wax. The cotton strands are braided together to form a length of braid, while different numbers of strands can be used to create different thicknesses of candle wicks.
