Make Candles From Old Crayons

Old, unused crayons can be helpful in making unique candles

Do you have a box of old crayons sitting unused in your house? Don’t let them go to waste! The wax from a few crayons can be used to help create a unique and personalized candle. Here is a list of what you will need for this project:

  • A one quart wax carton (such as an orange juice or milk carton)

  • One pound of paraffin wax

  • Five crayons

  • Two full trays worth of ice

  • A double boiler or empty coffee can

  • A six-inch cotton wick or piece of package string.

Before getting started, please keep in mind that paraffin wax is extremely combustible. It should therefore NOT be heated directly over a burner. Instead, use your double boiler, two-pound coffee can or s that is placed in a pan of water. We also recommend placing a canning jar ring (not the full lid) under the can.

Here is what you need to do:

  1. Cut off the top of your wax carton. Leave about six inches of the lower portion intact.

  2. Set one of your stove’s burners to medium heat.

  3. Place a pan of water on the burner, and your empty coffee can or double boiler in the water.

  4. Place your paraffin wax in the coffee can or double boiler and let it melt.

  5. When the paraffin is fully melted, break your crayons into tiny bits and add them to the mixture.

  6. Use scissors or tongs to dip the wick into the melted wax.

  7. Hold the string so that it's dangling in the center of your carton.

  8. Fill your carton with ice .

  9. Pour your hot wax over the ice cubes.

After this, the candle needs to sit for up to 2 hours (or until the ice is completely melted). Once this is done, you can pour out any excess water and peel the carton away. Place the finished product on a tray and let it dry for one or two days.
