There are many types of candles available, and each has its own unique look and use. If you’re looking to start making your own candles at home, it is important to know about all of the options that are available to you. Take a look through this list for a rundown on some of the most popular varieties of candles.

  • Taper candles – Taper candles are long, thin cylindrical products that get thinner near the top. You will often see these types of candles at a dinner table. You need to put these candles in appropriate holders to ensure that they stay upright and do not burn anything around them.

  • Pillar candles – Pillar candles are round and wide enough to stand on their own without a holder. The can come in a wide variety shapes, but squares and cylinders are the most common. Some are large enough to contain several wicks. It is highly recommended that you place these candles on a heat resistant base to prevent property damage or injury.

  • Floating candles – Floating candles come in an endless variety of shapes and are created to sit stably. The main draw to these candles is that they can float on the top of water.

  • Filled candles – These candles are poured in to flame-resistant glass jars or ceramic containers. The wax often incorporates vibrant colors or strong, pleasant scents. Some of them also come with lids that can be placed on the container when the candle is not in use.

  • Votive candles – Votive candles are very similar to filled candles. They are placed in glass containers to help control the wax pools and come in a wide variety of shapes, colors and scents. The main difference is that votive candles are, by definition, no taller than 2 and a half inches tall.

  • Specialty candles – There is no solid definition for specialty candles. They can come in any shape, size and color you can imagine. Christmas trees, sea shells, doves, cupcakes and flowers are just a few of the many specialty candle designs you can find. These products are commonly made in molds, but some people still hand-craft their specialty candles.
